Their teams manage hundreds of active projects simultaneously, each involving complex multi-stage workflows, plan versioning, and distributed field crews who often work in areas with limited connectivity. Challenge & Solution The project presented several complex technical challenges common in construction technology — particularly around offline reliability, workflow enforcement, and multi-role access patterns. Field workers operate in environments with intermittent connectivity, yet need guaranteed data consistency when syncing annotations and task updates back to the server. Additionally, construction workflows vary significantly between project types, requiring a flexible template system that administrators can configure globally while project managers seed and customize per-project.

Challenges

  • Field crews working in areas with no internet connectivity needed to create and modify plan annotations without data loss, then sync reliably when back online.
  • Construction workflows vary drastically between project types (residential, commercial, industrial), making a one-size-fits-all task state machine unworkable.
  • Different roles (superintendents, foremen, subcontractors) needed filtered views of tasks relevant to their responsibilities without exposing unauthorized data.
  • Plan documents go through multiple revisions, but existing annotations needed to carry forward to new versions without manual re-entry by field teams.
  • Managing multiple active sessions across devices while maintaining security required careful token lifecycle management.

Solutions

  • Implemented a bulk-sync endpoint using conflict resolution with epoch-millisecond timestamps. The system accepts batched annotation changes, detects conflicts via last-modified comparisons, and returns granular sync results per item — enabling the client app to implement a robust offline queue.
  • Built a global workflow template system where admins define reusable templates with ordered steps and flag groups. Projects are seeded from these templates at creation, allowing per-project customization while maintaining organizational consistency.
  • Developed role-based work queues with configurable default filters and user-level view preferences. Each role sees a pre-filtered task list optimized for their workflow, with mobile-specific view modes for field use.
  • Implemented annotation version inheritance — when a new plan version is uploaded, annotations from the previous version are automatically associated with the new version, maintaining spatial coordinates and metadata integrity.
  • Built a complete session management system with JWT access/refresh token pairs, SHA-256 hashed refresh tokens in the database, per-session revocation, and bulk revoke-all capability for compromised accounts.

Workflow Overview

  • Discovery & Architecture Design Conducted requirements analysis across 9 planned iterations (A1–A9), mapping construction domain workflows to technical specifications. Defined the layered architecture pattern (Routes → Controllers → Services → Repositories) and established conventions for UUID-based IDs, epoch-millisecond timestamps, and dual-database strategy.
  • Foundation & Authentication (A1–A2) Built the Express/TypeScript foundation with Prisma ORM for PostgreSQL and MongoDB integration for logs. Implemented JWT authentication with access/refresh token rotation, bcrypt password hashing, session tracking, and user profile management with Swagger API documentation.
  • Workflow Engine Development (A3–A6) Developed the core workflow system including flag groups/values, global workflow templates (admin-managed), project workflow seeding with flag mapping, and task management with workflow state enforcement. Each task progresses through template-defined steps with validation gates.
  • Field Operations Layer (A7–A8) Implemented role-based work queues with quick filtering and mobile view preferences for field teams. Built the offline-first plan annotation system with bulk-sync endpoints, conflict detection, and cross-version annotation inheritance for plan revisions.
  • Notifications & Push Foundation (A9) Delivered the in-app notification module with unread counts, mark-as-read operations, per-user notification preferences, and device token management for future push notification delivery via FCM/APNs.
  • Testing & Deployment Created automated PowerShell test scripts for each iteration's endpoints. Configured production deployment with CORS management, file upload handling, and reverse-proxy integration. Documented all APIs via Swagger UI accessible at the /docs endpoint.

The platform follows a modular layered architecture with clear separation of concerns. Each feature module contains its own routes, controllers, services, and repositories. PostgreSQL serves as the authoritative store for all business state, while MongoDB handles audit logs and sync packets. The dual-database approach ensures transactional integrity for critical workflows while providing flexible document storage for high-volume operational data. All timestamps use epoch milliseconds (BigInt) for precision across distributed systems, and UUIDs ensure globally unique identifiers without coordination.
